Debido a que el desarrollo de las nuevas tecnologías de la información y comunicación propulsan la generación de enormes cantidades de datos, las empresas están cada vez más interesadas en invertir en herramientas que les permita utilizarlos. Sin embargo, la inversión por sí sola no crea una ventaja competitiva. En cambio, las empresas deben crear capacidades para la gestión del alto volumen de datos que su competencia encuentre difícil de igualar. En este sentido, las capacidades de big data son un recurso fundamental que puede impulsar la innovación empresarial de la cual se puede ver beneficiada una organización. Mediante un estudio de 91 pequeñas y medianas empresas (Pymes) de la ciudad de Bogotá, se realizaron diferentes análisis descriptivos y de correlación, usando regresiones múltiples por MCO, según un modelo de investigación propuesto para estimar los efectos de las variables capacidades de big data y rendimiento innovador de las organizaciones. Se evidenció que las empresas que demuestran un mayor nivel de capacidades de big data a nivel de datos, tecnologías, habilidades técnicas y cultura de datos, tienen mayor rendimiento innovador. La investigación muestra que los recursos destinados a las capacidades de big data brindan a las organizaciones herramientas para avanzar en el desarrollo de la innovación y abrirse a nuevos mercados.
