Knowledge development has lead to new proposals for water management in response to the “water crisis”, which is one of the main concerns in this planet. The adequate water management is also part of the proposals to reach the UN Millennium Development Goals, especially the objective related to reduction of poverty and hunger that are affecting a great proportion of the world population. Human beings and ecosystems become the centre of the water management proposals due to the water effects on health, welfare and development. In order to improve the water management, Engineering practice should change so that technology be an answer to the social, economic and environmental needs with efficiency and sustainability criteria.
