Peer Review Process

The journal receives contributions in Spanish, English or Portuguese . The journal accepts the types of papers according to the general criteria established by the journals of science and technology in enginnering:

Full-length research papers are typically comprised of five sections: 1. Introduction, 2. Methodology, 3. Results and discussion, 4. Conclusions, 5. Literature references.

Essay papers discuss specific research topics from the analytical and critical perspective of the authors, making use of original bibliographic sources.

Review papers present a thorough review of the literature on a specific topic, integrating and contrasting published research with the aim of giving an account on the level of achievement and development trends for that topic. These papers usually include a long list of bibliographic references.

In consequence, during the initial stage of editorial evaluation, the following types of papers will be evaluated by the editor in chief: short papers (in which research proposals or preliminary / partial results of a research project are presented), case studies (in which just technical or methodological experiences associated to the study of a particular case are presented), and topic reviews (literature reviews about a specific topic without any significant contributions by the authors).

The journal is published twice a year and its audience is both national and international. The journal accepts only original and unpublished papers, that is, contributions that have not received prior publication in any printed, electronic or digital medium (e.g., other journals, conference proceedings, web pages, preprint sites, etc.). Submitted papers should not be under consideration for publication elsewhere in any medium. The originality and unpublished nature of the paper and the exclusiveness of its submission to the journal (Ingenieria y Competitividad) must be certified by the authors in the cover letter that accompanies the submitted paper.

Papers are accepted for publication on the basis of judgment of their academic quality after a thorough review process. A first evaluation is made by the Editor-in-Chief, together with the Associate Editors of the area of engineering corresponding to the submitted paper, after which point a paper can be rejected without further consideration or admitted for peer review. Papers rejected at this stage are insufficiently original, have serious scientific flaws, have poor Spanish or English grammar, or do not meet the presentation standards required by the journal in accordance with the instructions to authors. Admitted papers are passed on to two experts for review. Reviewers are matched to the admitted paper according to their expertise. The journal employs a double-blind review, in which the reviewers remain anonymous to the authors throughout the review process, and also the names of the authors remain unknown to the reviewers. Reviewers may typically take from one to two months to return their reports. Reviewers are asked to evaluate the organization and presentation quality of the submitted paper, the originality and scope of the work reported, the definition and justification of the problem approached, the soundness of the methodology used, the presentation and discussion of the results, the consistency between results and conclusions, and the relevance and accuracy of cited literature references.

When the reviewers’ reports agree one another, the Editor-in-Chief makes the decision to accept or reject the paper. If the reviewers’ reports contradict one another, the Editor-in-Chief seeks the opinion of a third reviewer. If the paper is rejected, this is returned to the authors together with the detailed comments from the reviewers and the editorial recommendation to revise the paper and consider its submission to another journal. The editor’s decision to reject a paper is final. If the paper is accepted with either minor or major corrections, this is returned to the authors together with the detailed comments from the reviewers for the authors to prepare a revised version of the paper, which should be returned within weeks, typically 1 month. The revised paper should be submitted together with a letter addressed to the Editor-in-Chief, in which the authors provide a list of all changes made in accordance with the reviewers’s comments. The Editor-in-Chief makes the final decision to accept or reject the revised paper, considering the reviewers’comments and the changes or corrections made by the authors.
